Finally the holidays are over! As we get back to a normal schedule we are happy to resume our regular visits to supplier locations and of course to share these experiences with you. The web is an especially good place to do this so please stay tuned. We’ll be sharing some stories but mostly pictures!
Seriously though, this is a very important part of how we choose companies to work with. We hope that you enjoy seeing these posts. As always we invite any customer to come with us on these trips and eventually hope to have regular scheduled trips to meet with suppliers. If you’re local, we take care of the transportation so it costs you nothing. It’s a great learning experience for all of us and often opens our eyes to new opportunities. We have typically been going on Tuesday mornings so please let us know if you’re interested in tagging along!
This week we stepped a little bit outside of our normal distribution partners and took a visit to a processor who supplies the companies we buy from. Relationships with producers and manufacturers are not new to us, but we have decided when possible to include these companies into our schedule. Knowing where the products actually come from and how they are handled gives us a new perspective of the distributors that we buy from. All of this gives us the ability to negotiate smarter.
So, here we go.
This week’s visit was to Mosner Veal & Lamb, where they still do things with a personal touch and a great sensibility to customer needs. Mosner Veal and Lamb has been around for three generations. It all started back in 1957 with founder David Mosner. Originally from Brook Avenue in the Bronx the Mosner family business eventually picked up and in 1973 moved to the Hunts Point Terminal Market also in the Bronx and took a space in the center of building E. Central to major arteries for inbound and outbound product shipments the move was an important to the continued growth of the company.
Over the years the Mosner’s sold through distribution and also did direct deliveries to restaurants where they became experts at customizing products catering to the needs of demanding chefs. Later David brought his two sons who evolved the business further. They stopped delivering to restaurants and decided to focus their attention to their craft rather than splitting their time managing a distribution company. Michael and Philip and were both there at the helm and we had a chance to meet with them.
We were welcomed by one of the third generation family members, Jessica Mosner. Jessica impressed us with her knowledge of the business and gave us quite a tour. Jessica is available through our program to meet with any of our customers to discuss custom cuts or anything else lamb and veal related that you may want to do. Please let us know if you would like to set something up for you!
